Chapter Eleven

Agatha pushed out of Hank’s grasp just in the nick of time. The glass door shattered behind them and a loud crack rent the air. Hank grabbed Agatha with his left hand and drew his weapon with his right. He jerked her off her feet as they dove behind a line of cars parallel parked in front of the café.

Hank felt the weight of her body in flight crash down upon his, and she grunted at the impact. His right shoulder caught the brunt of the fall. It felt like a branding iron had been shoved through his muscle.

“You okay?” he rasped, scrambling to cover her body with his own.

“I think so,” she said.

“Get behind this front tire. The engine block will help protect you. Unless you still want to go out there on your own.”

He was in agonizing pain. He wasn’t sure if it was the dive for cover or a bullet. He wiped his hand across his right shoulder and triceps. There was no blood.

Hank struggled to his knees. He couldn’t lift the weight of the pistol with his right arm. A quick switch from right to left and he was back in the fight. Another round from the rifle slammed into the side of the car they used as cover. The sound came from the same direction as the first attempt. Hank aimed his gun in that direction, but he knew the .45 would never match the distance or accuracy of a high-powered rifle.

Agatha’s eyes were huge, like dinner plates, and her skin was still flushed from the sudden lunge behind the vehicle. She had a naturally pleasant expression as a default, but Hank saw the tension of fear etched into the waning smile. She was a warrior poet in every sense of the word.

“Where’s Coil?” she asked.

“They’re pinned down inside along with Springer. We’ve got to coordinate with Karl. He’s across the street on the shooter’s side.”

“How do you know where the shooter is?” Agatha asked.

“You can see where the bullet struck the restaurant’s floor right there,” he said nodding. Look at the direction. That’s why we’re on this side for cover and not the other.”

“Are you serious? In that micro-second under gun fire, you saw and thought about all of that?”

“Yep. We’re no good without information, so I grabbed all that I could before we scrambled.”

Pain was causing him to grow weak, so he rested on his heels while he fought to catch his breath.

“I guess you really are as good as they say,” she said.

“Not good enough. We need help getting out of here.”

“How about him?” she asked, pointing.

Hank looked over his shoulder and saw Deputy Springer sprinting from around back of the café and across the street to join Karl. The guy was nuts crossing without cover fire, but Hank knew his motivation. His partner was out there alone.

“I told you the guy had potential,” Hank said.

“Yeah, but he’s gotta live to experience it.”

“I know this isn’t the best time to talk about it, but we’ve got no place to go until we’ve been given the all-clear.
